The White Man’s Burden and Its Critics
Jim Zwick, American Studies scholar.
This site presents Rudyard Kipling’s 1899 poem, “The White Man’s Burden,” along with more than 50 contemporary responses to the work. A 250-word essay provides historical context for the poem. Almost half of the responses, from “The Brown Man’s Burden” to “The Wrong Man’s Burden,” are in verse. Other responses include six cartoons, one photo, one advertisement for soap, and 17 speeches, essays, and editorials. Links to three other sites about Kipling are provided. This site will be a useful resource for discussing 19th-century imperialism, racism, and the intersection of politics and popular culture.
